About This Item

Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2008. Second printing. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 202 pp. with index. Luther Martin, the Anti-Federalist from Maryland, is known to us (if indeed he is known at all) as the wild man of the Constitutional Convertion. He was a verbose, frequently drunk radical who exasperated Madison, Washington, Gouvenor Morris and other founder who were responsible for the creation of the Constitution in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787. He feared that the new Constitution would reduce the states to mere ciphers and which would create a national government whose powers to tax and coerce would be frightening. In later life, Martin would act as defense counsel in two of the great trials of the age: the Senate trial of impeached Supreme Court justice Samuel Chase, and the treason trial of Aaron Burr.
