A very clean, solid, tight example, no stains, gilt lettering on spine is bright, no fraying, no stains, previous owner's inscription [to Hodge from Sarah] on front endpaper dated Easter 1932. Dust jacket clean, large chiop at bottom of rear panel without loss of lettering, irregular chipping at top and bottom of spine averaging 1/4" with loss of last two letters of "Holt" and "Company", 1/2" narrow V-chips at four tips.

Hough with much gratitude from [then uses printed title "The Forest Hospital At Lambarene] & its New York representative, Helene Schweitzer. NY. 24/II 1939." With the ink name of "Ann Hough" on the front endpaper- daughter of Bassett. In 1913 Albert & Helene founded a hospital (now the Albert Schweitzer Hospital) at Lambarene in Gabon. In the first nine months, the couple examined 2,000 patients, some traveling hundreds of kilometers to get there. Helene played many roles: nurse, anesthetist and overseeing sanitary methods for preparing medical equipment.
