About This Item

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1854. First edition. Cloth. Good. 12" by 10". Richard Doyle. A first edition of Richard Doyle's illustrated travelogue, with his iconic cartoons throughout. This work humorously describes Brown, Jones and Robinson's travels across Europe, including to Switzerland and Italy. It was a popular Victorian work.Richard Doyle, the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was a popular Victorian illustrator. Training under his father, the political cartoonist John Doyle, the young Richard Doyle would join the famous 'Punch' magazine aged 19. Entrusted with designing the masthead for the magazine, his design would feature on the cover of 'Punch' for almost a century. Though a prolific illustrator, he was know for being incredibly unreliable, once nearly losing a commission to illustrate Thackeray's 'The Newcomes', due to consistent tardiness. This contributed to his limited successes during his lifetime.Richly illustrated with cartoons by Doyle throughout; collated, complete. With the ownership bookplate of Charles Benson to the front pastedown, and the contemporary ownership inscription of M. A. Robinson, Kent, to the title page. The first edition of this work, one of Doyle's most popular. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; spine is a touch cockled, with bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little spotted throughout. Good
