About This Item

Hartford, Conn.: The American Publishing Company, 1897. 1897. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE [ONLY ONE PUBLISHER NOTED ON TITLE PAGE, THE AMERICAN PUBLISHING COMPANY]. Blue binding, decorative designs in gilt and gilt lettering, frontispiece photo of Mark Twain with tissue overlay, vintage illustrations/photos throughout along with vintage illustrated/photo plates, 712 pages. Condition of binding: some light shelf/handling wear. Tears to front endpapers (at hinge), with short piece of cello tape used to prevent further tearing. Rear endpaper at hinge has minor creases, short tear. A few creases, short tears to extremities of preliminaries. Foot of fore-edge has what appears to be an old liquid stain (that continues to the right side of the bottom edge), but it could simply be a partial discoloration of edges. Short marginal tear to pages' 115/116. Text is clear, very readable; illustrations/photos are vivid. Overall: Very Good. A nice first edition, first state of a classic Mark Twain work. Scarce. This is a wonderful book by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens), the humorist, writer, and lecturer who won a worldwide audience. Here Twain gives his observations, insights, reminiscences, revealing observations, and sardonic humor of his steamship travels to Hawaiian Islands, Sandwich Islands, Fiji Islands, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, and more. Twin's perceptive descriptions and discussions are fascinating and fun to read. Very collectible book. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will receive when you order. We ship promptly. . First Edition, First State. Hard Cover. Very Good.
