Ann Beattie's collection contains a novella and nine stories. Three of the stories zero in on the same character, a woman who, in her final appearance, is having a hard time handling the eccentricities of her elderly mother. The novella, "Flechette Follies, " is about a man and a woman who meet when they're involved in a minor auto accident and who then go on to be involved in each other's lives as she hires him to track down her troubled and troublesome son. Beattie has won four O. Henry prizes and other recognition. She is the Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia.
