About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1950. Silver title on green cloth boards which have a few minor marks but very clean with no wear. Internally very clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket is complete with some chipping to top and some wear. Translated by E.W. Dickes. An historical novel of an 18th century nobleman, he had known venal beauty in London and lost his good name, had sailed the Indian Ocean as a pirate, winning and losing fabulous jewels, had discovered perfect beauty, only to find it tainted with vice. For his niece it was otherwise, unhappily married in earliest youth, she fell in desparate love with a pupil of Tiepolo. The two intertwining stories purport to spring from an old manuscript discovered by the author. B2D. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
