About This Item

New York: The Martin Luther King Tribute, 1970. Unbound. Fine. Flyer. Pink quarto sheet printed both side. Hint of wear at the corners, else fine. A flyer touting the release of this Martin Luther King, Jr. documentary directed by Sidney Lumet and Joseph Mankiewicz, who constructed the film from newsreels and other primary source materials. Released for just one night on March 24, 1970, the film received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary and was later selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. Its unusual single-day release made it difficult to view for more nearly decade after its debut aside from occasional television appearances. Later it was released for the view in the education market and home release on DVD. This flyer was distributed in New York for the one-day "world premier" event with an image from the poster of King behind bars and with a partial list of theaters on the back divided into various neighborhoods (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, etc.), as well as a few other locations around the state. Uncommon.
