A very nice first printing of the first US edition [Harcourt NY (1978)], boldly signed by author Gunter Grass, winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature, directly on the title page. The book is in near fine condition with very light fading to the cloth at the edges but with no remainder marks, a tight and square binding, with no owner inscriptions or highlighting and no staining or marking. The dust jacket is also in near fine condition, not price-clipped ($12.00), with small creases at the spine ends but no chips or tears and minimal shelf wear. It is now protected by an archival cover which is easily removable. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.
Synopsis
It all begins in the Stone Age, when a talking fish is caught by a fisherman at the very spot where millennia later Grass's home town, Danzig, will arise. Like the fish, the fisherman is immortal, and down through the ages they move together.
