About This Item

Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, 1493. Woodcut, 25 x 53 cm, on sheet 42 x 60 cm, black and white, small stain in image, stitch holes at centrefold closed on verso, published in a German text edition with further text on verso. One of the earliest obtainable views of Florence, derived from a lost engraving by Francesco Rosselli. The woodcuts were created in the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, possibly assisted by Albrecht Dürer (who was the godson of the book’s printer, Koberger). Hartmann Schedel's encylopedic ‘Liber Chronicarum’, widely known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, is deservededly one of the most famous incunables. As many as 2500 copies in either Latin or German may have been printed; it was instantly popular, widely distributed and hugely influential, perhaps the most significant illustrated secular work of the 15th century.
