Note that this edition has 176 pages, fewer than the later 1882 and other Houghton, Mifflin editions, which added two chapters and which have 226 pages. (All Houghton - whether Houghton Osgood or Houghton Mifflin - editions were issued in varying cover colors - red, green, brown - but all with the same blind stamped design. The 1878 1st editons I have seen have the additional gilt design along the top and lower front edges, as seen here.)
