The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky (1851-1892). Significant edgewear to cover, internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep (M. Kirshbaum?), another on end paper (V. Rikovshky?) with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge, some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species, generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species, summaries of distribution (by local government region) and habitat, flowering times, and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. He travelled largely in Venezuala and Columbia and introduced the Anthurium plant to Trinidad & Tobago, 1915.]. Signed by Author. First English edition. Cloth. Fair.

Vienna: Schrämblischen, 1817. Image is 8 1/8 inches by 6 1/4 inches on a sheet that is 9 1/16 inches by 7 1/8 inches. Drawn and engraved by pharmacist turned naturalist Ferdinand Vietz ((1772-1815) and published in volume 7 of Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum, edited by J. L. Kerndl and published by Schrämblischen in Vienna in 1818. Original hand-coloring. Like all the plates from Vietz's classic work on medicinal uses of plants, this is a lovely original print on high-quality watermarked laid paper. Condition is very good: clean and bright. Binding edge is untrimmed. This original engraving is guaranteed to be more than 200 years old.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good+. Illus. by Ferdinand Vietz. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
