About This Item

London: British Museum Press, 2006. NrF/Fine. First Edition, First Printing in d/w price clipped. Inscription reads, 'for Josephine/KEEP ON FLOATING!/love & best wishes/from/John/10.12'. Profusely illustrated with forty-five colour Japanese illustrations. Ukiyo - the floating world - is the name given to a remarkable phenomenon that began seventeenth-century Edo (modern Tokyo). The floating world has been described as a state of mind, 'living only for the moment, singing songs, drinking wine and diverting ourselves', as well as a world of licensed pleasure-seeking which promised release from the restraints imposed on life in a highly regulated urban society. The pleasure districts of old Edo included colourful kabuki as well as luxurious shops where the work of screen printers and laquer craftsmen was displayed. Light bruising to tail of spine; else a near fine copy, in a fine d/w, of a SCARCE first edition, first printing SIGNED BY AUTHOR, JOHN REEVE.. Presentation Copy Signed And Inscribed By Author.
