Harmsworth Bros. 1900/1901. 1st editions.. 2 vols. Large Hardbacks, Folio size. 13 x 10 inches. In red cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. Pink boards with dark red spines. In good condition. Some rubbing on edges, volume I small split head of front hinge. Covers part faded with small marks. Else clean and tight copies. 716pp. 2 lg.fold-out maps. Many b/w ills.,mainly from photographs and authentic sketches taken in South Africa. Maps. The story of the Boer War. The preface discusses the effects on the war of the development of smokeless powder and smaller bore ammunition in producing more casualties but fewer deaths. The British Army was completely unprepared for the experience of receiving fire from unknown positions and had to revise tactics to deal with a new way of fighting. The book gives some of the causes of the war, traces its development and progress and discusses the leadership. A final chapter considers lessons to be learned.
