About This Item

New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/good. Octavo. Publisher's cream cloth, stamped in blind on the upper board, and in black and red on the spine, colored endpapers, pale-yellow-stained top-edge; book with a very slight lean, else about fine, in a bright dust jacket with a few short tears and minor rubbing. Inscribed on the FFEP by Malamud to one S. J. Hessel, M.D., probably at the behest of one Betty Godfrey, who has affixed her signature above Malamud's.

Synopsis

Bernard Malamud was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was an author of novels and short stories. His novel, The Eighth Day was the winner of the National Book Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1967. In this fictionalized account of a true story regarding a viciously anti-Semitic incident, the protagonist, Yakov Bok, a poor Jew, travels to Kiev to try to change his life situation and fortunes. He tries to pass for a Gentile and is hired on as a supervisor of a brick-making factory. Soon, there is a murder of a Christian child and Bok’s Jewishness is discovered; he is unjustly imprisoned for the murder. He experiences torture and abuse at the hands of his jailers and slowly comes to realize his faith in the potential humanity of Christians and Jews alike. The novel employs rich, complex characters and an intellectual message regarding the need for humane political actions.
