About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1942. First edition, first printing. Published by Hodder and Stoughton in London, 1942. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, with its iconic design from the hand of Eileen A. Soper, is strikingly bright on both panels, though has undergone some mild and highly professional restoration at the top and tail of the spine and along the top and tail edges of both panels. It has been neatly price clipped. The boards are so slightly bumped at the top and tail of the spine. There is a small stain to the front panel, which appears to be a rust stain. There is an impress from a previous owner's inscription to the front fly leaf. The internals are pristine and crisp and the text blocks, though slightly toned due to poor paper stock, are mostly free from foxing. Overall, this is a near fine copy of a wildly popular children's title. Rare in such a bright dust wrapper, due to its inherent fragility. It is the first book in The Famous Five series. It has been suggested that the book was influenced by L. T. Meade's 1892 book Four on an Island, which also recounts a story of four related children including a tomboy along with a dog living on a private island with a shipwreck.

Synopsis

"Ah, the Famous Five! In this first book, we open with Julian, Dick and Anne at home with their parents, chatting around the breakfast table. Julian asks his mother if they're going to Polseath as usual for the summer holidays—but to the childrens' surprise their parents have decided they want to go away on their own to Scotland. The children must go to stay with their Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin, down by the sea at Kirrin Bay. They have a daughter by the name of Georgina, who is very lonely and could do with the company of a few cousins. And so plans are made, and they all pile into the car and set off." THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s books were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having substantial difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid and the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old). Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.
