London: Robert Hale Ltd., 1940 Illustrated from photographs taken by members of the expedition. First English edition, first printing. Personal copy of mountaineer George Lowe, with his bookplate and ownership inscription: "W.G. Lowe. / 1953. / from John Pascoe / Wellington N.Z." with additional inscription by fellow New Zealand author and mountaineer John Pascoe: "John Pascoe / rule / c/o Dept. Internal Affairs / Wellington." Publisher's red cloth, lettered in silver, pictorial endpapers illustrated with maps of the Himalayas and K2. A good copy, with lean to spine, fading and a few spots of soiling to boards, some wear and rubbing, spine cracked but holding, with Pascoe's review for Five Miles High and the dust jacket front flap and panel adhered to inside pages. Overall, a presentable copy, with an excellent association. George Lowe acquired this book from John Pascoe in 1953 - the same year as the British Mount Everest Expedition that saw Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay make the first successful summit. A writer and outdoor enthusiast, Pascoe made several notable climbs in New Zealand and wrote his own books on mountaineering. Five Miles High is an account of the 1938 American Karakoram Expedition, which sought to summit K2, the world's second highest mountain. Specifically, the expedition members take turns narrating the excursion from their preparatory planning through their final descent. In addition to their narratives, Five Miles High includes comprehensive appendices that describe even the smallest technical details of the trip, including a summary of the climbing activities, a breakdown of what food was brought and in what quantities, type of equipment, financials, transportation, and weather. . Signed. 1st English Edition. Hard Cover. Good.
