About This Item
London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes (complete, see below), octavo size, 927 total pp. Henry Cholmondeley-Pennell (1837-1915) authored several books on fishing, including "The Angler-Naturalist" (1863), "The Modern Practical Angler" (1870), "The Sporting Fish of Great Britain" (1886) and "Modern Improvements in Fishing Tackle and Fish Hooks" (1887).
He also, of course, published "The Book of the Pike" in 1865, whose first printing, in serial form, is in these two volumes.
These two volumes include the monthly installments beginning with April of 1864 and ending with October of 1865, which comprise the entirety of the publication; apparently this periodical was ended when its successor, "Land and Water", was introduced.
With eleven colour plates throughout (one in Volume I and ten in Volume II), and additionally with numerous black-and-white illustrations and drawings, most in-text but several full-page.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in half-leather over marbled boards, spines with leather labels and gilt rules, text block edges speckled red; octavo size (8 5/8" by 5 3/4"), pagination: Volume I, [2, title page and verso with printer's statement] [i] ii-v (Index), [vi, List of Illustrations], [1] 2-432; Volume II, [2, title page and verso with printer's statement] [i] ii-v (Index), [vi, List of Illustrations], [1] 2-479.
___CONDITION: Overall a very good set, with strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright with some light scattered foxing at the first and final few pages, collated complete, and other than a pencilled name at the top of both front free endpapers, free of prior owner markings; the bindings are good only, the leather spines somewhat dry (but not cracked or peeling), the corners bumped but not rubbed, the marbled boards showing the worst wear with some overall rubbing and with the paper entirely gone on a portion of the front board of the first volume and a small space on the front board of the second volume (see pictures and request more if needed). Overall good bindings (solid but a bit worn) over near fine text blocks, overall a very good set.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
