East Lansing, Michigan: Michigan State University Press 0-8713-492-2 [0-8713-492-2] 2000. (hardcover) ix, 572pp. Near fine in near fine dust jacket. 8vo. On August 13, 1990, members of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe filed a lawsuit against the Minnesota for their interference with the hunting, fishing, and gathering rights that had been guaranteed them in an 1837 Treaty between the Chippewa and the Government of the United States. This presents a discussion of the circumstances under which the Treaty was written, the personalities of the individuals involved in those negotiations, the legal rhetoric of the time, as well as an analysis of the legal conflicts between Indigenous and non-indegenous people.
