About This Item

The novel was included on Time Magazine's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923, and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003, it was listed at number 15 on the BBC's survey. "The Big Read".

The first and "classic" translation of the novel into Russian was performed by Rita Write-Kovaleva, a Soviet writer and translator. In the USSR Russian versions of many works appeared for the first time in her translation - Heinrich Bell, Franz Kafka, Jerome Salinger, William Faulkner, Kurt Vonnegut, Natalie Sarrot, Anne Frank, Edgar Poe. She translated into German the works of Vladimir Mayakovsky (including "Mystery-buff"). Author of an artistic biography "Robert Burns" (1959), memoirs of Mayakovsky, Khlebnikov, Akhmatova .

Her translation of Salinger was first published in the 11th issue of the magazine "Foreign literature" for 1960. The name was changed by her from "The Catcher in the Rye" to "Over the Abyss in the Rye", since in Russian the word "catcher" does not carry all the connotations characteristic of its English counterpart. The text itself, which was criticized for "rudeness" in the writer's homeland, was slightly "softened" by her.

The first Russian separate edition of Sallinger's works was published in 1965. The design uses a fragment of a painting by the American artist E. Wyes. In addition to the story "The Catcher in the Rye", the book also includes other works by the author: the story "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters", the stories "A Perfect Day for Bananafish", "The Laughing Man", "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period", "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut".

Since the first publication, Salinger has become one of the most popular American authors in Russia, many generations of young people have read his works.
