About This Item

First Russian translation, first publication of famous "On the Road", the novel of American writer Jack Kerouac. The appearance of this book was hailed as "the most beautifully executed, the clearest and the most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as "beat", and whose principal avatar he is" (NY Times). In 1998, the Modern Library ranked "On the Road" 55-th in its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20-th century. The novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.

The first translation of fragments of Kerouac's novel into Russian was made by the translator V. K. Efanova and was published in 1960 in the journal "Foreign Literature". The novel was presented in three parts, called "Mexicanochka", "Jazz of the Broken Generation" and "Across the Mountains and Valleys of the Universe". The book was published as a separate edition in Russian only in 1995.

Translator Vera Konstantinovna Efanova (Miller) (1909-2006) – a woman of unique and tragic fate. She was born in the family of the famous Russian historian of German origin – Gerhard Friedrich Miller. After the revolution in Russia, she was in Harbin (China), and returned to Russia in 1954. She translated from English the works of St. Zweig, G. Wells, C. P. Snow, Henry Kuttner, W. Faulkner, E. Caldwell, J. Kerouac. The author of the book of memoirs "Home from the Back Door" (Moscow, 1999).

An artistic cover depicting a Soviet pioneer against the background of nature. Artistic red and white title pages represent different nations. Artistically designed titles of new chapters and drop caps. There are photos and illustrations. Black and white photos depict Cuba right before the Caribbean crisis. Colored photos represent paintings of artists from Europe, Japan, Korea, India.

The copy of magazine is in good condition. Few abrasions on the spine. A pencil note on the backside of the back cover. Pages are in good condition.
