The very first American abolitionist novel, published 15 years before Uncle Tom's Cabin, which some have argued it influenced. The anonymous author was an enigmatic, Harvard-educated contributed articles to various magazines. Poor health led him to spend two years in Florida, where he was he witnessed of the evils of slavery to write the anti-slavery novel The Slave; or, Memoirs of Archy Moore. It became incredibly popular, heralding a new genre of abolitionist slave narratives. In only fair condition. Covers detaching, missing one free endpaper. Pages toned, and mildly foxed. An extremely influential early text in the abolitionist movement.
