Description:
New York: Modern Library, (1946). Hardcover. Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper. Reprint of this popular collection which features Frost's essay on poetry, "The Constant Symbol," as an introduction. This copy has been SIGNED by the author and INSCRIBED to minor poet and folklorist Addison Barker with the complete eight-line poem "The Pasture," the first poem in the book, in the poet's hand on the page opposite the title page. The recipient's signature is on the front endpaper above a pasted newspaper photograph of Frost, and Barker has noted on the title page the date Frost wrote the poem in the book: 25 January 1950. Barker has an interesting connection to Frost in that in 1951 he published the discovery of the very first appearance in print (BLUM'S FARMER'S AND PLANTER'S ALMANAC FOR 1850) of the proverb "Good fences make good neighbors." Barker tried to find an earlier, New England appearance before publication in the North Carolina almanac but was unsuccessful. There were previous variants on… Read More

London: printed for J. Johnson, No. 72, St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1791. Second Edition. Vellum. Fine. First Edition illustrated by William Blake (and first to carry Wollstonecraft's name on title page) of this didactic collection of stories for children. 12mo: viii,[4],177,[3,advertisements]pp, with six full-page copper-engraved plates (including frontispiece) designed and engraved by William Blake. No half-title, as issued. According to Easson & Essick, there are two states of the plates, but only a few copies have the first state; some are a mixture. Windle, however, has identified a third state and notes that Bentley believes the plates were optional in both the 1791 and 1796 editions. A superb copy, newly rebound by Fitterer in full vellum with salmon pink morocco lettering piece gilt. Light offsetting from plates, very minor foxing, else clean and bright in a very pretty pristine binding. Bentley 421A. Bibliotheca Bibliographici 596. Windle A3b. Description:
Retold by Boris Zakhoder.
First edition with these illustrations. First book edition of this translation.
This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was done by Boris Zakhoder (1918–2000), a prominent poet, translator, and children's writer. Zakhoder's version was first published in the magazine Pioneer in 1971–1972 (# 12, 1-3) and was accompanied by an introduction where he expressed his desire to rename the book something more creative than Alice in Wonderland. He suggested names such as Aliska in Imagination, Aliska in Surprisedland, Aliska in Chepukhania or Aliska in Raschudesiya, but ultimately succumbed to the established literary tradition. Zakhoder also confessed that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was his favorite book, which he had re-read in the original language for 25 years before translating it into Russian. He tried to convey the same emotions and imaginative spirit of the English version to Russian children in his translation. Zakhoder's adaptation was a… Read More

First publication of classical Russian translation by N. Demurova. First Russian edition of both novels in one book.
Lewis Carroll's works, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found, were almost unknown to Russian readers until 1967, despite having been published in Russian several times.
The story of how this edition came about is quite amusing. A Bulgarian publishing house issued an edition of Carroll's novels in 1965, which caught the attention of Soviet authorities in the International Book… Read More

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
