Limited edition (750 copies designed by Lawton Kennedy and printed by The Howell-North Press in Berkeley, CA); 6 1/2 x 9 1/2; pp. [10], v-vi, [2], 1-170, [2]; illustrated green cloth over boards; gilt title to spine; deckled page edges; portrait frontis; minor wear to corners and tips of spine, near fine condition. Clear acetate jacket with 2 closed cuts to upper corners and faint wear, very good.Initially published as 18 separate articles in the San Francisco newspaper 'The Golden Era' in 1853, the stories follow the pre-Gold Rush events in California through the years of 1845 to 1847.
