About This Item
White Mane, 1988, 1988. 3rd printing. Hardcover. Worthington, Glenn : Fighting For Time: The Battle That Saved Washington and Mayhap the Union. Shippensburg (PA) : White Mane Publishing, 1988 reprint. Introduction by Brian C. Pohanka. Size is royal octavo (8vo), 9"/23cm H. Bound in publisher's bright red coated cloth, gilt lettering imprinted on spine. DJ in color with dramatic reproduction of Gilbert Gaul's Skirmish Line. Front endpaper shows map of Virginia to Pennsylvania theater, pastedown only, flyleaf blank; rear has two page spread of battlefield dispositions on July 9, 1864. Numbering of pages complicated by adding new material to a reproduction, thus: reproduction of 1932 edition contains x pp prelim material, plus 306 numbered pp, within which are 14 leaves with a map, illustration or photo on one side (only). The prelim material is itself preceded by viii (unnumbered) pp, while after the original index (p 306) the reader will find an additional 40 pp without numbering. Thus the entire volume has a total of 392 pp/196 leaves. There is not a table of contents for all material in the book: Pohanka's 1985 introduction; original t-o-c, including appendices, illustrations, maps; revised material at end includes one page introduction by Pohanka, 9 pp of Union soldier accounts of the battle taken from the National Tribune, a photo of CSA troops marching through Frederick (MD), a blank page, 12 pp CSA accounts of battle, a blank page, 2 pp of officers' photos, both armies, blank page, and finally six sheets with 'battlefield today' photos and maps on the recto side only. Condition notes: Nice, bright, tight, square, unmarked. DJ shows edgewear particularly at folds, and is covered in mylar wrap. A nice addition to your collection of material on the clash between the forces of Jubal Early and Lew Wallace at Monocacy Junction, Maryland, the last Confederate attempt on Washington DC. We personally inspect every book we offer.
