About This Item
London: Humphrey Toulmin at the Cayme Press Limited, [1930]. First Edition in English. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo, original blue cloth titled in black on spine panel. 392 pp. Spine panel darkened and a bit spotted, covers faded as usual with this book, mild foxing to page edges. The front endpaper bears two early original alchemical copper engravings, one depicting the sun, the moon & a winged sphere, the other depicting a man with seven heads inscribing a magical circle. There is also a small ownership ticket with the monogram "HSJ" beneath an image of a Phoenix. A clean sound copy of a very uncommon book.
¶ A vividly portrayed account of witchcraft and sorcery in late medieval Germany, the tale of a soldier captivated by a woman who is seduced by demons. Set amongst such historical figures as Cornelius Agrippa and Jean Weir, this is one of the greatest and most compelling novels of traditional witchcraft ever written. Originally published in Russian in two volumes in 1908 and 1909. Briussov (1873-1924), a distinguished poet and the accepted head of the Symbolist school of Russian poetry, claimed to have translated it from an original XVIth Century German manuscript.
