About This Item
London: John Camden Hotten; (no date). First Edition . Hardcover. First edition (preceding the US edition) of the author's first book, very good lacking a dust jacket. Dark maroon cloth, with gilt demon on front board and near bottom of spine. There is some loss of the cloth at the top of the spine (about 1/4"), and slight fraying at the bottom of the spine. The front endpaper is detached but laid in. The rear hinge is a little loose. With the bookplate (on front pastedown) and signature (on half title page) of Vincent Starrett, Bierce's biographer and bibliographer. A nice association copy, in all probability the copy Starrett was looking at when he compiled the first bibliography of Bierce's works, which was published in 1920.
