About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Good+. Paul Rand (dust jacket), W. A. Dwiggins (type and binding). 8vo. Pp. x, 298, viii. Frontis. black & white Company photo. Illustrated with a further sixteen pages of black & white photo reproductions. Dark red cloth, Dwiggins illustration and titles stamped in gilt on the spine, illustration on the cover, Borzoi device in blind on the back, brown topstain: remnants of a small tag on the front endpaper, endpapers and edges a tad age-toned. In the two color illustrated dust jacket, price clipped: edges rubbed, short closed tears, spine ends chipped and red ink faded from spine. The index cites four references to Frances Farmer; we're uncertain as to revelations of her affair with Clifford Odets. Author Clurman, one of the three founders of the Group Theatre, may have been circumspect in his treatment of the issue. In the handsome Paul Rand-designed dust jacket with a torn-admission ticket, channeling the innovation of Alvin Lustig. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
