This short history of the Fenland is intended as an introduction to the evolution of an almost unique area of Britain. Until the 17th Century it was a waste of peat bogs interspersed with islands, sparsely inhabited by an independent race of people living in primitive conditions and existing mainly on the fish and fowl they obtained from the rivers and meres. The foresight and determination of a few men changed this into what is now one of the most highly productive areas in the country. Land, once valueless,now produces rich yields of sugar beet, potatoes, celery, carrots, grain and other crops which are supplied to the markets of London and elsewhere. For the benefit of the reader who wishes to read further on the subject, short lists of books are interspersed through the text and these may be obtained in most cases through the local public or county library.
