New York: F.S. Church, c. 1889. Very Good. Notes: This photograph, which depicts a female graduate taming tigers, is after one of F.S. Church's oils and is signed by him. The photograph is taken by Kurtz.
There is also an original drawing by Church accompanying the photograph, inscribed:
"Knowledge is Power"

Frederick Stuart Church was born in 1842 in Michigan, and studied in Chicago at the Academy of Design. He was awarded a silver medal at the St. Louis Exp. in 1904, and his work "Moonrise" is on display at the Metropolitan Museum, New York. He died in 1924 in New York City. (Fielding 152)
This particular painting currently hangs in the Frederick Stuart Church Collection at the Grand Rapids Public Library, Michigan, having been included in the donation given to the library by Charles L Freer, a patron of the arts contemporary to Church and also a close personal friend.
