The Quare Fellow, a tragicomedy, is set in an Irish prison on the eve of an execution. The Hostage is set in a disreputable Dublin lodging house, where a young Cockney soldier is being held hostage in reprisal for an I.R.A.man who is about to be hanged. Rough comedy, hair-raising jocularity, obscene insults, rollicking comedy, satirical songs. An Irish writer and playwright born in Dublin in 1923, Brendan Behan was one of the most colorful and controversial of Irish writers. He spent three years in Borstal, a boys reformatory, which he vividly described in his autobiography, "Borstal Boy" (1958). 182 pages. 12 mo. 1964, Evergreen Black Cat Book/Grove Press.
