About This Item

Dublin: Wolfhound, 1989. First edition. 112pp., Illus. photos. When he died in 1960, Father Browne, Jesuit priest/photographer, left a graphic legacy of some 42,000 negatives, annotated and indexed, capturing Ireland and its people; the collection is considered an important archive in Ireland where it is housed, a record of change within the country, and a testament to a skilled photographer. The editor of this selection of black-and-white photographs, a fellow Jesuit, has arranged the pictures by the counties in Ireland's four provinces. The images, all from the first half of this century, tell stories of people at work, at home; we witness children at play, enter grand houses and humble cottages and see reflections of age and youth. The editor's preface to this well-designed pictorial history reveals the charming man behind the lens. (Publisher's Weekly).
