About This Item

Albany: Printed by H.C. Southwick, No. 94, State-Street, 1814. Octavo (23.5 x 15 cm.) [vii], 327, [1] pages Errata on final page; Subscriber list. FIRST EDITION. The following year, a second printing was issued with the descriptive subtitle, "a complete treatise on agriculture in general: also, upon the various subjects of gardening, fruit-trees, farriery, and the dairy, arranged in alphabetical order to which is added a copious index". John Nicholson, Esq. (1765-1820) was from New York's Herkimer County, and he employs this guide to farming as type of patriotism for the still young nation. Text-block foxed throughout. In the original printer's binding, untrimmed; three quarter sugar paper over orange paper spine, titled and with decorative printed bands. Some rubbing and light staining to boards; paper spine chipped away at foot and hinges just started. Still, attractive and scarce in a wholly original, and attractive, binding. Ink ownership inscription to free front endpaper, "William [illeg.]". [OCLC locates twenty-three copies of this first issue; American Imprints 32356; Rink 1166].
