Synopsis

Toklien's second published novel, Farmer Giles of Ham  was written in 1937 and published in 1949. It is a light-hearted satire for readers of all ages that tells the tale of a reluctant hero who must save his village from Chrysophylax Dives, a comically villainous dragon. The title page of the original edition expands the title:  Farmer Giles of Ham : Aegidii Ahenobarbi Julii Agricole de Hammo Domini de Domito Aule Draconarie Comitis Regni Minimi Regis et Basilei mira facinora et mirabilis exortus : or in the vulgar tongue = The rise and wonderful adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom. The original UK edition was '‘Embellished’ by Pauline Diana Baynes, an English illustrator who worked on over 100 books, including multiple Tolkien books and the Narnia series for C.S. Lewis.

Reviews

On Jul 30 2007, KnC Books said:
Whether you love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, or just can't figure out what the fuss is all about, you owe it to yourself to read Tolkien's short story "Farmer Giles of Ham".

The story allows you to experience J.R.R. Tolkien at a slightly slower, less grandiose scale than the sweeping panorama of "The Rings". Somewhere between a fairy tale and a fable, the story revolves around Farmer Giles, his village, and a dragon. Along with the expected mythical creatures and heroic adventures are bits of humor and everyday life, making Giles just another person who has heroism thrust upon them in a stressful situation.

The story reminds me of James Thurber's "The Great Quillow", another story appropriate for adults, taht you can also read to your children.
