About This Item

Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1905. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1905. Children of the Bible Series. First Edition, with the scarce dust jacket. Illustrated copiously. 12mo, light brown dust jacket with black design and imprinting, ornately gilt-imprinted cream boards with pastedown illustration as well; floral endpaper illustrations; 42 pp. Please see scans. The book, technically Very Good Plus, has the curb appeal of Near Fine, with just endpaper foxing shadow the quaint little old sticker of a jeweler in Roxbury, NY who once owned it, and a yet earlier owner's name artfully inked, in 1910, within the "This Book Belongs To" box printed by Altemus as part of the front endpaper illustration. The rare jacket has darkened with age, shows small-scale chipping along the top edge and small pieces of loss at its spine, but is essentially complete, including flaps. A genuinely striking book, from Altemus' Children of the Bible Series (each title within which highlighted the childhood of a different biblical figure; this one focuses on Jacob's farm boy youth). Gorgeous binding, remarkably preserved; and the humble-by-comparison dust jacket is very, very scarce. You won't likely ever see this combination again. L-28
