About This Item

Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1956. Fine in near fine jacket.. Scarce first US edition of this ghost adventure by the pseudonymous writing team of Adelaide Manning, formerly of the War Office, and her neighbor, British intelligence officer Cyril Coles. Best known for their series of spy novels drawing on the professional experience of both authors, the team of Manning and Coles also published several lighthearted ghost stories (as Manning Coles in the US and as Francis Gaite in the UK); in THE FAR TRAVELER, the deceased Graf Adhemar von Grauhugel wanders unawares in phantom form onto a historical film set and is quickly screen-tested and cast as himself. Deprecated by spy-novel specialists as "what passed as comic novels in the early fifties" (Panek); of decided interest to the more ghost-tolerant reader. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original grey cloth. In original unclipped ($3.00) pictorial dust jacket by Arthur Shilstone. 224 pages. Sun and faint soil to spine and rear jacket panel; minor edgewar.
