About This Item
New York: The MacMillan Company, 1938. Frontispiece is a portrait of Fanny Kemble by Thomas Sully. Margaret Armstrong, decorative Designer, Artist, and Author has written an absorbing biography "Fanny Kemble A Passionate Victorian". Fanny Kemble (1809-93) , Actress, Playwright, poet and autobiographer was born into a distinguished theatrical family. The daughter of Charles Kemble and niece of Sarah Siddens and John Philip Kemble. She married Pierce Butler a southern planter from Philadelphia in 1834 where she went to live. She left him in 1845 over disagreements over slavery ( as Butler owned a plantation and used Black slaves). She became an advocate for anti-slavery in this Victorian era. Much hardship was suffered along with her triumphs. Endpapers make up a scenic two-page spread. Name to perlim. A sound, respectable book. A very interesting read.. First Edition, First Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
