This the only full-length, thoroughly documented study of the life of Fanny Kemble, British actress, writer, abolitionist, and the daughter of actor Charles Kemble and actress Maria Theresa De Camp. Born 1809, Fanny became disenchanted with what she saw as the artificiality of the theatre and retired from the stage in 1834 to marry Pierce Butler, the heir to a rich Georgia plantation. The real life on a plantation was a shock to her and she was unable to live with slavery. She went back to England, separated then divorced her husband and later went back to the US and did public readings opf Shakespeare which were very successful. She also wrote attempting to influence public opinion in Britain against the Confederate States in the U.S. Clean, red cloth w/gilt titles on spine and front, gilt coat-of-arms on front. Corners scuffed, light fraying of spine ends with a half inch slit to cloth at spine head. Sewn binding is tight and solid. Backstrap loosened. Inner hinge cracked. Previous owner signature on flyleaf. Endpapers illustration of a Victorian countryside scene, with carriages, horse-back riding, peasants. Interior clean, completely unmarked, no tears, lightly toned. Cover has light wear, interior is very clean and completely unmarked. 382 pages. 8vo. 1938. Macmillan Company, USA
