FIRST EDITION circa 1860 (dated from V & A copy), 235 x 183 mm, 9¼ x 7¼ inches, white boards with 8 hand-coloured story vignettes on upper cover, each in a gilt frame, gilt lettered and decorated on upper cover, repeated on lower cover without hand colouring or gilt, adverts to endpapers, (96) pages, 4 stories paginated individually. Hand coloured title vignette of dog and fox, and 44 full page interesting brightly hand-coloured illustrations, plus 4 hand coloured pictorial half-titles, 1 to each story: The Two Sparrows; Kindness and Cruelty or, The Grateful Ogre; The Red Cap or, The Dwarf of the Rugen; Honesty and Cunning or, the Fox and the Farmer's Dog. Expertly rebacked to match, colouring on upper cover rather faded and slightly worn, corners and board edges slightly worn, some slight scratches and scrapes to upper cover next to spine. Occasional slight pale fingermarks, contents very bright. A very good copy. Books by Crowquill are actually illustrated by Alfred H. Forrester and written by Charles R. Forrester.
