(4 ll.). *** FIRST EDITION. Sousa de Macedo (1606-1682) studied law at Coimbra and rose to the highest echelons of the magistracy and diplomatic service, including secretary to the Portuguese Ambassador to London and Ambassador to the States of Holland. He was Secretary of State under D. Afonso VI, whom he commends in this speech made when D. Afonso was crowned in 1656.
