About This Item
New York:: Grosset & Dunlap, 1926.. Reprint Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: blue cloth with vignette of two running collies; top edge tint is a dark shade; owner's name stamp on the front endpaper, a Good book, with a Fair dust jacket.. small 8vo (7.75 inches tall) . Illustrated endpapers. Description: The Grosset and Dunlap reprints of Terhune's dog stories were issued in two different formats. The earlier issue was done in cloth with the head of a collie blind stamped on the front cover. The endpapers for that series featured two dogs on the left hand page with a stream or road separating them from a single 'windswept' collie on the right hand side. This listing is for a copy from the later issue which featured dust jacket art by noted wildlife artist Bob Kuhn. The bindings for those were either solid color cloth or 'tweed' with a vignette of two collies running. The endpaper scene shows those same two collies on the left hand, and the right hand side shows a single collie leaping into a pond. One of Kuhn's paintings -- divided in half -- yielded two different dust jackets and was used (in black and white) in its entirely for the endpaper art for all in the series. The hero of this story is Mars, who at the command of his master performs a truly amazing feat.. Note that the only printed date is the 1926 copyright; this circa 1970s. This is the tenth book in the Sunnybank series.
