Mildly edgeworn, with spine and top edge sunned. Tight and nice first edition of this collection of the Founding Fathers thoughts about freedom in their own words. The author's uncle was Carl Schurz Vrooman (1872-1966), businessman farmer and assistant secretary of agriculture under Woodrow Wilson best known for starting the "victory garden" campaign of WW1 -- whose wife Julia Scott Vrooman (1876-1981) was niece of Vice President Adlai E. Stevenson I. This unusual copy is boldly inscribed and signed by Carl Schurz in black ink on front flyleaf thusly to his wife's relative: "To / Adlai & Nancy Stevenson / from / Carl & Julia Vrooman." Illinois senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930) was of course son of Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), two-term Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate -- and his grandfather (the naming skipped a generation) was Adlai the First. Laid in is a small newspaper clipping of Carl Vrooman's review of his nephew's book.
