Viby, Jutland, Denmark: Nordic Paper Industry, 1949. First edition thus. Rare, charming, eleven volume set of Andersen's most famous fairy tales in miniature w/the original ornamental case. Books measure approx. 2.25" x 3.25". Fully illustrated in vivid colour by Svend Jensen of Denmark. Card covers are of assorted colors and illustrated front and back, generally moderate wear. Pages in good condition. Endps. adhered to covers. Includes the scarce, ornamentally designed box depicting several story scenes for storage w/some dent, bend, sticker-pull. Front of box depicts Hans Andersen reading to children in oak grove w/castle rising in b.g., sides depict child in at sleep w/starry sky and magical elfen being holding umbrella above; and other is of king of Orient w/nightingale outside his window; inside flaps, a room w/king wearing red and white vestment opening a large book chest on checkerboard floor. These volumes are highly collectable and beautiful objects in their own right. Dating from 1949, the set contains translations from the original Danish of the following fairy tales: The Emporor's New Clothes, The Real Princess, The Tinder Box, Thumbelisa (2 volumes), The Flying Trunk, The Shepherdess and The Chimney Sweep, The Little Match Girl, Numbskull Jack, and, The Ugly Duckling (2 volumes).
