About This Item

Chicago & New York: N.K. Fairbank Company; Lithographed by G.H. Buek & Co., [1897]. 4to. 8.5 x 11.75 in. Six colour chromolithograph leaves, printed on thick paper stock, each with image on recto, calendars & lettering in blue & gilt, punch sewn through upper margin by white silk braid (very slight shelfwear, slight rubbing), NF copy. First edition of this exceptional and brilliantly printed Victorian chromolithograph calendar for the famed Fairy Soap Company during the Gilded Age. These splendid images of fairies draw from paintings by Gustave Liebscher (1870-1953), known for his figure and cityscapes; Eugene Grivaz (1852-1915), a Belle Epoque artist who exhibited in Chicago, New York, and Switzerland; Charles Schabelitz (1844-1905), best remembered for his Buffalo Hunt painting; Albert H. Sonn (1867-1936), noted American artist well known for his watercolours, and striking commercial art; Walter G. Read (1863-1950), an excellent artist, perhaps best known for his famed watercolour painting of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders’ charge up San Juan Hill. Fairbank’s Fairy Soaps were one of the most popular brands of the famed company, and after the company was purchased by Proctor & Gamble in the early 20th century, and remains one of their most popular brands in Europe. Gustave H. Buek was a very successful commercial lithography printer, and not only aided in the formation of the American Lithographic Co. of New York, but was the first to introduce facsimile water-colour work into commercial lithography. Worldcat locates 1 copy (Syracuse); See: Faust, The German Element in the United States with Special Reference, Vol. II, pp. 110-111.
