About This Item

London: N. Hailes, Juvenile Library, 1818. 1818. Hardcover, about 4¼- inches wide x 7-inches tall. THIS IS THE ACTUAL 1818 EDITION, NOT A FACSIMILE, MODERN REPRINT, OR A PRINT-ON-DEMAND. Very scarce title, originally published in 1785. Leather, gilt border on covers, gilt lettering/designs on spine. Illustrations/woodcuts at beginning of chapters. Marbled endpapers, 164 pages. Condition: Wear/tears to binding, mostly at joints and extremities; short abrasion at lower right corner of top cover. Covers re-affixed/reinforced with clear cello binding tape. Gift inscription on first blank (dated December 1, 1855). Page 164 torn, mostly at gutter. Edges age toned. Text-block age toned, scattered foxing, yet text still very readable. Overall Fair condition. Book written for children to teach them about compassion for animals - not to get into "habits of tormenting inferior creatures, before they are conscious of giving them pain; or fall into the contrary fault of immoderate tenderness to them." This storybook helps children understand the need for treating animals with "great fondness." The end result "will engage the attention of young minds, and prove instrumental to the happiness of many an innocent animal," according to the author. A beautiful, still timely book for children. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly. . Hard Cover. Fair.

We tend to describe each book in a reserved, conservative manner, rather than oversell a book or sidestep the responsibility of addressing its flaws. We describe our books in detail, pointing out the precise condition of each book based on our opinion. It's your assurance that the book we describe is as close as possible to the book you’ll receive. In business since 1991, we typically have five-star ratings on major web sites.
