Manheim: Typis Academicis, 1768. First German Edition. leather_bound. Full contemporary morocco, black spine and green covers, marbled endpapers in very good marbled slipcase. Aeg. Two Vols. in one. Near fine. [2], 58, 290, [2], 291-615 pages. 19.5 x 12.5 cm. Desbillons was a neo-Latin French fabulist and poet. As a Jesuit , he taught humanities at Nevers, at the Collège du Mont in Caen, and at the Collège de La Flèche. After the dissolution of the Jesuit society, he was recommended by the writer Fréron to the Elector Palatine. Frontispiece and 15 engraved plates by Egid Verhelst. First illustrated edition of the vast complete collection of Aesop fables, arranged in 15 books to give a total of 532 fables in Latin verse, with extensive footnotes. BRUNET II, p.607. GRAESSE II, p.364. Raised bands, spine panels decorated in gilt florets, cover panels in floral and vine gilt designs, backstrip with red and black leather labels printed in gilt.
