About This Item
This is a presentation copy of "Fables of Field and Staff" by James Albert Frye. 1894 1st edition; The Colonial Company; Boston. With an inscription by the author dated 1894 on the front end paper. Decorative floral end papers. The book contains 7 stories about a volunteer infantry regiment - please see the photos for the contents.
From the author's Preface: "The seven fables flanked by the covers of this book have to do with as many strange and wonderful happenings in the history of an infantry regiment - an infantry regiment of volunteers - in time of peace. They are seasoned abundantly, from end to end, with that which is stranger than fiction, but they differ slightly from 'muster-rolls for pay,' which, I am informed, one has to submit under oath. If you are of the volunteer service, you may be trusted, I think, to catch the spirit of these stories; if you are of Th Army, you may consider the tales as illustrative of the customs of a service to which your own is but distantly related; but if it is your great misfortune to be an out-and-out civilian - why, then you must take your chance with what follows, and lay no blame upon me should you find yourself on unfamiliar ground."
Condition:
Clean back cover and spine; some light soiling to the front cover; bright gilt on the front cover and spine; sharp corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages; there is a tiny paper tear at the hinge between the front end paper and pastedown. The text pages are clean and nearly appear unread with no issues found. Author's inscription in pen dated 1894 on the front end paper. Name/date (1950) written in pen on the title page. Overall the book is in very good condition.
