About This Item

UK,slim 12mo p/back,1st edn thus. [Originally published as 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edns by The Temple Press,(London),1951 and Harper and Brothers,New York (1951).This first Penguin/Pelican issued is a revised edn of those. At the time of production and it's issue, this edn was NOT FOR SALE in the U.S.A.] VG+. No owner inscrptn and no price removal to cover. Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,matt,3-colour block (b/w+blue) artist's impression,by Alan Lindsay, illustrated front cover with black lettering, blue+white spine with black lettering and a small production wrinkle but NO reading creases, rear panel with minimal, sporadic foxing/spotting and b/w thumbnail author's portrait photograph and his potted biography All edges lightly aged/toned; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound,no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, unread, apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo p/back,1st edn thus (revised),5-192pp [paginated] includes separate contents and b/w plates lists/tables,an author preface explaining the reason for the revision,18 chapters, 16pp of b/w plates in 1 block, between pp96/7,b/w diagrams interspersed within the text, and an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages.
This title being the author's third non-fiction title. It is Clarke's follow-up to the previous, and more technical, 'Interplanetary Flight' (1950).The revision occurs as in less than a decade from when first written (1951) the size of rockets had grown from 14 tons to several hundred tons, speeds had increased four-fold and most importantly - the Earth no longer has a single moon.Basic astronautic theory, calculations and predictions have been proven, whereas before, they were received with scepticism and if any else were conservative. As the author himself says in a further ten years,it will interesting to see if these further predictions too were conservative.
