Text clean, light even toning. Shelf handling wear with loss of spine tips, open corners; early plates have toned throughout the 64 lithographic plates by H. Lawrence.

Lawrence as follows: Landscapes (plates 1-12); Geological Sections (folded plate 1, plates 4-11); Paleontology (plates 1-6); Zoology (plates 1-18); Botany (plates 1-17, 19-20). Botanical plate 18 and Geological plate 2 were not issued. It is likely that Geological plate 3 was not bound into this copy, as there is no indication of it having been removed.

Written by one of the greatest nineteenth-century American explorers, this is one of the most interesting accounts of an original exploration of unknown parts of Texas [Marcy] was the first Anglo-American to discover and explore Palo Duro Canyon and Tule Canyon . Marcy described in detail the little-known Wichita tribe and compiled the first Wichita dictionary" (Jenkins, 'Basic Texas Books' 135B).

This is a hand colored engraving on high quality watermarked paper dated 1815 and made by W.Balston & Co. It is a beautiful decorative antique print expertly colored and beautifully composed.
