An early edition of this collection of stories about the Brigadier Gerard, originally published in 'The Strand Magazine'. By Arthur Conan Doyle. An 1899 reprint of this work. The story of Brigadier Gerard and his exploits. Containing various stories following the comedic hero, Hussar officer in the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Gerard is very vain, he believes to be the best soldier, greatest swordsman and horseman, as well as the most desirable lover of France. A work by Arthur Conan Doyle, who featured Brigadier Gerard in seventeen historical short stories. With his character, he satirises the British view of the French and English manners and attitudes.This volume contains eight stories: 'How the Brigadier Came to the Castle of Gloom,' 'How the Brigadier Slew the Brothers of Ajaccio,' 'How the Brigadier Held the King,' 'How the King Held the Brigadier,' 'How the Brigadier Took the Field Against the Marshall Millefleurs,' 'How the Brigadier Played for a Kingdom,' 'How the Brigadier Won his Medal,' and 'How the Brigadier was Tempted by the Devil.' Profusely illustrated with twenty four plates by W. B. Wollen. Collated and complete.This copy came from the library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire, the previous home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (1902-1968). She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with fading to the spine and bumping to the extremities. Internally, hinges slightly tender but firm. Volume is firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good
