Una cum descriptione machinarum continentur. 1682, Latin text, small 4to, 230 x 175 mm, 9 x 6¾ inches, printer's pictorial device on title page, 5 folding engraved plates, pages: (8), 1-130, (2), rebound in full modern panelled calf, gilt lettered maroon label to spine, gilt decoration to spine, new endpapers. Pages lightly age-browned, occasional pale margin foxing, small pale stain to title page and first 15 pages, 20 mm (1") diameter gradually diminishing in size, not obscuring text, occasional pale stain to margins, small tear on 1 lower margin (paper flaw?), scribble in margin of final text page and first page of index, 4th plate slightly foxed at lower edge, tiny hole in blank area of 5th plate neatly repaired. A good copy. This is an early Latin edition of the second continuation of Boyle's "New experiments physico-mechanicall, touching the spring of the air, and its effects", first published in 1660 and first published in Latin in London in 1680. This second continuation to Boyle's first scientific work describes the third air pump used in England. This pump was designed in 1676 by Denis Papin, who had brought it with him from France the same year, when he joined Boyle.
